"Don't let the bed bugs bite"
Figure 1: Bed bugs, their eggs & fecal spots
No longer reserved for a night nursery phrase, the bug has come back with a vengeance in to the US. Bedbugs are not a new phenomenon, they have actually been around since the days of the Egyptian pharaohs.
In recent years the bedbug, Cimex lectularis L. has come back into the US. Thanks to WWII and the use of some harsh chemicals (which have since been banned) the US hasn't had to worry about bedbugs till recent.
Since the change in pest control practices and the increase of international travel, bedbugs have come back.

Bedbug prevention first comes with understanding the pest. Here are a few signs to look for:

- Bed bugs are most active in warmer weather. They feed at night and hide in cracks and crevices during the day.
- Look for the bugs themselves as well as for evidence of bed bug activity including egg casings, shed skins, fecal stains, blood streaks on sheets or a sweet, musty odor.
- Bed bugs bite people at night while they are sleeping. The symptoms of a bed bug bite vary, ranging from itchy welts and localized swelling to little or no reaction.
- Bed bugs congregate in hiding places close to where they feed - which is usually the bed.
